In the Baliem Valley surrounded by inaccessible mountains live the Dani tribe and an American missionary with his family. They are on good terms with each other, also because of the medical care provided by the missionary to the inhabitants. Highlight in the lives of the Dani is the yearly recurrent ritual Pig Feast.

Description (source: www.beeldengeluid.nl): Shots: Air pictures of the forest through which the Baliem River meanders and of the Baliem Valley with its numerous gardens. Two American missionaries who are preparing motor launch on the river bank, being watched by lots of Dani. The swift Baliem River with a suspension bridge spanned across, that is used by the inhabitants of the valley. 01.40 Missionary is doing the rounds of the huts, from which inhabitants and pigs emerge. They greet him warmly. 02.33 Missionary gives penicillin shots to the children in the buttocks. The missionary's wife, assisted by Dani, is doing the washing in empty oil-drum, which has been transformed in a washing-machine in an ingenious way, her children, sitting on the shoulders of Dani are looking on. 03.12 Missionary surrounded by Dani is showing bible pictures, giving explanation to the images. Studying the language, the missionary is using a tape-recorder, having an old and a young Dani speaking words into the mike, to compose a dictionary. 04.15 Walled-in gardens of the inhabitants of the valley with stones for these walls. Child weeds garden with his hands. Camera-shy women with head-nets running away for fear of the 'magical eye'. Boys are training for hunting by throwing sticks like spears through thrown up hoop. Man is plaiting simple upper arm decoration from grass. 05.30 Pigs grubbing about near hut, a precious property. Members of friendly tribe arriving at the village. The inhabitants are bringing together lots of grass, they are dressing up with soot and pig's fat. They are cleaving wooden poles for firewood. The earth is being opened with pointed stick, the clods being removed by hand, so that they have a shallow pit. 06.40 On a bottom of stones a rectangular pile is made, which is kindled so that rocks on the pile will be heated. Man has himself being dressed up by helper. Dani shows the working of a mouth harp, which they carry about in their nose. 07.13 Pig is being chased up and shown to the principal guests. With bow and arrow the headman of the receiving tribe kills piglet, which is held up by fellow-tribesmen, and then a pig. Four killed pigs awaiting treatment. On separate pile the pigs are scalded, after which the upper skin is being scraped with bamboo knives, then the animals are dissected with razor-sharp bamboo knives. A mouth harp musician. 08.31 The rocks heated on the pile are seized with forked sticks, to put them into the roasting pit, which is clad with straw. The meat with some vegetables is put onto these rocks, then covered with grass and tied up with flexible sticks. 09.43 A piece of roasted meat is being fetched out of the pit. Pieces of roasted meat ready to be distributed. The men sitting in a circle are feasting on the banquet. The missionary's family participates on the meal. 10.25 Single-engined plane takes off from the airstrip. Air pictures of the mountain tops enveloped in clouds and of meandering Baliem River. End.
