Information film about a mission post in the Baliem Valley. Images about daily life in the village. The missionaries attend to the sick, help the women with their work, and take care of some administrative tasks. The communication with the outer world is maintained by means of a small aircraft. Animals are slaughtered and food is prepared in a stewing pit as a preparation for a feast.

After this he puts a plaster on to the left lower leg. 07.18 Inspector amongst tribal heads, sitting with his back against a hut, discusses the local problems. 07.29 A piglet is being killed, sparks in a handful of straw are blown and a log-fire is built. 07.43 The killed pigs are held over the fire to singe off the bristles, after which the skin is scraped clean with the fingers, and then it is cut open with a small bamboo knife. 08.00 Bunches of leaves for the stew pit are carried along, while big stones are being put on to the fire. Leaves are spread on to the bottom of a shallow pit, the hot stones carried on with forked poles or with liana bearers are put on to these leaves. Potatoes go on these, then alternately leaves, stones, vegetables and as top layer the meat. Then pit is sprinkled with water, covered with leaves which are bent together and tied up. 08.49 Witch doctor announces the reason of the feast. 08.57 Inspector and tribal heads are awaiting the preparation of the food, sitting near the pit. 09.05 Inspector offers a big shell to the headman expressing his thanks for his hospitality and a hunting knife to another headman. Sticks are put into the cleft on both sides, so that the wood keeps under tension, thus facilitating the chopping. 10.41 Missionary pays the price agreed upon in shells. 10.52 Missionaries continue their way, the little son on his father's shoulders. They meet a villager who takes the little son on his shoulders. Together they descend to a couple of huts. 11.21 Long and straight path leads onto the mission post, on which a young missionary teaches a Papua how to cycle. 11.46 Older missionary makes first an older than a younger Papua speak a word in their language, while young Papuans from the coast in training to be teachers, are looking on. 12.09 End.
