EA/99/3 -
bowl

bowl

Objectcode
EA/99/3
Description (brief)
Wooden bowl for serving meals of sago porridge (bapeda). The bottom of the bowl is engraved with several patterns. The deeper-set parts are coloured white with chalk. The patterns on both long sides of the bowl possibly depict animals (crocodile, lizard). The rounded side of the bowl and the projection (from which the bowl can be hung) suggest it represents a turtle. During festivities such a bowl is used to eat from collectively. The sago porridge is then served with fish and a spicy sauce.

It was probably meant as wall decoration (similar boards with patterns from Sentani, Tanah Merah and other areas were produced at the university museum in Abepura for the tourist trade in the 1970s) The patterns were originally used for decorating praus and/or drums.
