Film : Super-8, Kodachrome, Colour Length : 18 meters Running Time : 4 minutes Filming Date : 13 November 1971 Place : vicinity of Yiwika, Baliem Valley, West Irian, Indonesia. Description: The first portion of the film " O-Musin" deals with the methods of sharpening the jage eken, or stone to be used for cutting a tree. Kurelu and Wili prepare the stones by rubbing them back and forth over the jage man or sharpening rock at the place Kolopale on the Sompam river. The stones are rubbed against the jaga man in an inverted position from using position as another man, Apmabaga, splashes water over the stones to aid the abrasive action. The stones are rubbed until the crescent shaped edge is smooth and sharp. The total process usually takes approximately a quarter of an hour to complete. The activity of the men is watched by a daughter of Kurelu, named Wolokhe. The second portion of the film depicts the actual tree cutting using the stone adze or jaga. The expression for tree- cutting is "o-musin". The tree, a hard red wood, is known as jual by the local people and measures approximately 10 inches in diameter. The tree is cut by Wili and a young man Abasue, at about shoulder height. The actual cutting takes about 18 minutes to complete, allowing for perhaps one drink during the work. At one point Abasue, the younger man, must be shown the proper method of cutting and assisted by the older Wili. Following the conclusion of the tree cutting, Kurelu is depicted eating the traditional food, the sweet potato and the jaga is seen in its usual carrying position over the shoulder by Wili. Another man, Nakleak, is also shown after the tree felt. Persons (shown in order of appearance) : 1) Kurelu 4) Wolokhe 2) Wili 5) Abasue 3) Apmabaga 6) Nakleak Terminology: 1) jaga eken: stone 2) jage: adze 3) jual: tree cut 4) jaga man: sharpening rock 5) I Sompam: river name 6) Kolopale: place name 7) hymperi : sweet potato This description was prepared by Larry L. Naylor, Southern Illinois University in collaboration with J.A.E. Camps ofm, using local informants. Chief informants for this film were Uwo and Kirilmo.

Filmed by : J.A.E. Camps ofm. Description of Hotaly Pupukhe : Hotaly or girl's initiation ceremony, occupies the second half of Camps 31. This ceremony was held in the vicinity of Yiwika and is usually held on the onset of a girl's first menstruation. The actual location of the ceremony was Pelaloba, a place of many trees. On the onset of a girl's menstruation, she informs her mother and etai is held in the hunila that night. The following morning, the girl's mother puts mud on the girl. Other girls express sympathy with the girl and ask to have put mud on them also. A play involving a mud battle begins. In general it is the boys against the girls and women, but if a girl is being put upon too hard, a boy often comes to her aid out of sympathy. In this film the action is picked up during the preparation of special skirts, the kiluak and isibat and at the beginning of the mud battle. The etai of the previous night and the mudding of the girl had been completed and is not shown in this film. During the course of the mud fight, lasting about an hour, mud is thrown, rubbed in faces, tempers are lost and blood can be spilled, but it is meant to be in good fun. The sides then divide according to sex and they go their separate ways to wash off the mud accumulated during the fight. The older sister of one of the girls for who this ceremony is held, Lageialoklek does not wash off the mud out of sympathy for her. The next step is to put a new skirt on the girl. The older sister is seen doing this for Pupukhe. The skirt is the sali or that of girls not yet married. Boys and men are excluded from this but can be seen at a distance casually observing all they can. Words are spoken at this time but they remained unknown, are wusa. A sweet potato feast and more etai are reported to follow this, but again this is not shown on the film. After a girl has had her hotaly, it is almost certain in the next large pig feast she will change to the jokal or married woman's skirt and arrangements for her marriage initiated.
